One of the most commonly asked question about alternative medicine is what is acupuncture? For this form of treatment, there are many ways to go about healing the body and when the question of what is acupuncture is raised, there are usually different replies to it. The reason is simple because there are many forms of acupuncture and they are as good for different treatments. When you consult a skilled practitioner, it is best to ask them what type of treatment and how they can effectively help you to recover.

Then what is acupuncture? It is a very traditional form of medicine that originated from China that dated back to 3000 years old and maybe longer. It is very different from Western medicine but rather based on the flow of energy in the body known as qi. Qi is in fact the life force of the body and when qi is disrupted, a person will become ill and encounter pain.  Acupuncture will restore the flow of qi and improve your overall condition through easing of pain and curing illness.

In essence what is acupuncture are the types of methods used to restore qi. Acupuncture is actually needle piercing, indirectly translated.  The restoration of qi will be through the insertion of tiny needles in the meridian of your body. The point known as acupoint is specific to each treatment and the acupuncturist is well trained to identify the correct way to insert the needles.

Aside from insertion of needles into the acupoints, other forms of treatments such as small pulse of electromagnetic energy, heat, suction and friction are usually combined to provide a complete cure. One other common treatment is pressure acupuncture.  It is done to stimulate the points to cause certain reaction. In essence, through the stimulation of specific points, body balance is restored and the qi flows smoothly again, hence good health and free from pain.

Many decades back then people might ask what is acupuncture and met with a stare or some answer about obscure medicine. These days, it is a common and regular form of treatment but it is best to use in conjunction with medications prescribed by your physician. It complements Western medicine to aid healing faster. Acupuncture is highly regarded and encouraged throughout the world as it can help your overall well being.

Much can be celebrated about acupuncture and the history of acupuncture dated back many centuries ago. This ancient form of medicine was almost discontinued but it has seen flourished in the last two decades. Western and traditional form of medicine is not a cure-all and alternative form of treatments has become as popular to manage pain, overcome illness and improve your overall quality of life. It is the closeness to natural form of treatment that appeals to people.

Acupuncture was founded in China centuries ago and there are historical records to indicate that this form of medicine was practiced. There are some who believed that the history of acupuncture dated way back to the formation of Taoist tradition which was 8000 years old. When Taoist meditates, they realize there is a flow of energy in their bodies that provide the vital energy known as qi. The renowned Taoist legend Fu His lived on the Yellow river and he was credited for developing the first theories of yin-yang through observing nature. In his later life, he came out with the Book of Change or I-Ching which was the outline of the trigrams that became very popular.

The history of acupuncture was traced on the basis of needles that are found today.  In some part of China which housed the ancient ruin, needles are found dated back to as far as the New Stone Age which was from 10,000 to 4000 years back. At that time, people are already skilled in refining stone into very thin needles. The needles were then used to heal the body and were given the name of bian stone. The name implies a sharp object that is used to treat illness.

Some essential things are noted in the history of acupuncture, for instant during the period of Huang di dated from 2697 to 2597. It was an important period where Huang Di and the physician Qi Bo collaborate and develop acupuncture as well as many of the ancient form of Chinese arts. The text, The Nei Jing (The Yellow Emperors Classic of Internal Medicine) was developed and was paramount for acupuncture as it was where you find techniques, needles, acupuncture points and descriptions of the meridians.

Many refinements of these processes continue with the history of acupuncture leading to new and advanced acupuncture methods. Nowadays the basis of acupuncture can be found in ancient acupuncture.
